MANIAC: Krashen’s 6 Hypotheses is a document that will help you to remember the core ideas of comprehension-based teaching. MANIAC is an acronym that will help you to remember six of Dr. Stephen Krashen’s hypotheses about language acquisition, and how they can be applied in the classroom. I chose maniac because teaching this way will give you boundless energy and confidence– to teach like a maniac, but in a good way.
This document is based on, 1) the reactions of my high school and college students when I have taught these concepts to them, 2) the questions of graduate college students in university courses where I have been a regular guest speaker, and 3) questions and comments by colleagues at conferences and in online forums over the past 20 years.
